On Thursday November 11th Riverdale students, along with the rest of the country, had a day off. Most spent the day studying for next week’s finals or taking a one-day vacation, but November 11th was supposed to be in remembrance of US veterans.

Veteran’s Day started after World War I, and today is meant to pay respects to the war veterans. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, the Armistice was signed in Germany, officially ending the conflict between the Allies and Germany. The next year Woodrow Wilson declared Armistice Day. While November 11th is now known as Veterans Day, it was originally dedicated to the cause of world peace.

A little known fact about Veterans Day, it was originally celebrated with a dinner of ravioli. This was tradition was started by Woodrow Wilson, who invited 2,000 veterans to the White House for a dinner of ravioli on the first Veterans Day. Wilson served ravioli because the canning industry was on the rise and he predicted that ravioli would soon be the a popular meal for Americans. Since then, ravioli has been considered the traditional meal for November 11th.

While students and businesses now have an entire day off, this was not always the case. Originalyy there was a brief two-minute moment of silence starting at 11 o’clock, then workers went back to business.
