Research Reflection When doing research for my exhibition I tried to use books more than the internet because the internet has alot of misinformation about kind of obscure topics. I did use EBSCO to find articles about reflexology but it wasn't very effective. I also interviewed a Portland, OR reflexologist. I found some books that were pretty helpful because they had more information about reflexology than just instructional stuff. My expert was also pretty helpful because she was willing to spend time talking to me. One thing I learned about doing research is that just because there are a million resources on your topic it doesn't mean they will be good resources. A big frustration of mine was not being able to find good resources. I would check out 10 books at a time from a library and bring them home to work on my paper and only 2 or 3 of them would be helpful. I learned that I really don't work well at school but that if I sit down at home and work I do really well. Another weakness of mine is that I don't work very well with computers so I can't conduct very good internet searches. If I did another project like this with extended research I would check out the resources on the topic before I chose it and I would try to set aside a specific time block each weekend just to work. The librarian gave me a list of local reflexologists and I phoned some who seemed more like they practiced massage rather than reflexology. My expert has studied reflexology for 15 years along with massage so she seemed like the best choice. My frustrations were in trying to find somebody who actually practiced reflexology but it was great once I found somebody valid and willing to talk with me. I would rate my effort on the research portion of the exhibition at a 7. I've spent alot of time outside of school at the library and home doing research. Because of the lack of really good resources on my topic the quality of my research is probably about a 5 or 6. Paper Reflection I spent time writing my paper, revising it and using feedback to make my paper better. Mr. Thompson, Mrs. LePore, and some fellow students gave me feedback and helped with ideas. Working with the juniors helped when they answered the prompts I had a really hard time with trying to put my own views into the paper and I still don't feel I did a very good job of that. That was my biggest roadblock. I learned that it's really important to be interested in your topic. Towards the end I lost interest in my topic and that was really hard.I learned that I do a lot better with writing when I can relate to my topic. I didn't have a huge connection to my topic and that hurt me. Everything in my paper was learning for me. When I began this paper I vaguely knew what reflexology was but I learned a lot more about it.I feel I have a lot of information in my paper and I feel I answered my question well but I need more ethical analysis. I looked at the feedback that was given to me and applied it to my paper. I would work on my paper more in the beggining of the project and check out my resources more carefully before I began if I were to do this again.I would rate my effort and quality of work a 7. Presentation Reflection I created my power point first so that I could visualize how it would look as a slide show and then I created my presentation outline and agenda from that. To create an activity I created a purpose and then from my purpose I tried to create an activity that would fulfill that purpose. For my grabber I just tried to do something that would engage my audience and get them thinking about my topic.I liked making my power point once I got a hang of it because it was fun for me to really improve it and use peoples feedback to make it better. I had a really hard time trying to come up with an activity. My topic isn't very interactive so engaging an audience is kind of difficult. I don't think I prepared well enough for my panel presentation because I didn't really know what to expect. I think we made it seem more practice and less formal than it really was. I followed the criteria in preparing for both my presentations but that isn't all it takes for a good presentation. A person needs to do more than just follow criteria to make their presentation really good and interactive and interesting. I think I had a really good power point and I was confident. Also, people are pretty interested in my topic so that helped, esspecially with the question and answer time and discussion. I really improved my power point and added alot of information to my presentation to make it longer and more interesting when I did it for the public presentation. I really didn't like the way my panel presentation went so I put alot of time and effort into improving my presentation. It was definetly valuable to present twice. If my first presentation had been my final I would have been really dissapointed in myself and upset that a years worth of work had ended up being that. I would definatly focus more on engaging the audience if I do another presentation like this because I think that that is really important. It's hard to present to poeple if the aren't paying attention and it makes the presenter not want to be presenting. I would rate my efforts on the presentation a 10 and my actual presentation an 8. Service Learning Reflection I have worked for 5 hours every Saturday this year, with the exception of 3 Saturdays, at The Bargain Tree. This store is owned by The Junior League of Portland which is a group of women who do volunteer work. All the proceeds from the store go to women and children in transition. I learned alot about the people of Portland and experienced an entirely different walk of life than I usually experience. This service benefited me by giving me a new experience and allowing me to help other people who are less fortunate than I am. My service helped others by me helping people from Dress For Success and similar places to pick out clothing and by me being at work and there being incoming money then there is more money going to women and children in transition. I believe women should have more power than they do and so I think working for the Junior League and helping women is exemplory of my beliefs. I would rate my effort a 9 and the quality of my experience a 7. Final Reflection Use of Time I have a really hard time focusing when I'm given free time to work at school and my friends are around. I didn't really use my class time well. I probably was truly working about 50% of the time during the first and second trimester but during the third trimester I really used my class time well because I have a harder time with setting up a website and power point by myself. I spent a lot of time on homework during all three trimesters. I think that the time I spent on homework demonstrates that I have a pretty strong work ethic. If I don't use my classtime well I will use my own time to complete what I need to complete. I never had flex time. Overall Reflection If I have to do another project like this again then I will absolutly check out the resources for my topic before begining the project and I would use my time better. I really liked creating my power point and it was fun learning how to make a web site because I've never done anything like that before but it was really trying at times also. To have this project completed feels amazing! I cannot wait to be truly finished and have this incredible stress out of my life. I don't really feel I have accomplished that much through doing this project. I was excited to do my presentation and I'm proud of my web site but nobody who's important to me really cares about it so I feel like I did this entire project for nobody and I felt I did better on my presentation than My grade reflected so that was kind of a dissapointment. I just feellike I've wasted my entire senior year. I feel my effort on this project was an 8 and the quality of my work was an 8 also. I really didn't benifit from having a teacher, 11th grader, and outside advisor read my paper. The exhibition reflects the RHS program because there is an incorporation of all subjects and there is a lot of student input. I don't really think the other grades have any responsibilities toward the exhibition other than coming to the presentations. I really have no idea why we have a senior exhibition other than learning some skills like power point and how to make a web site. For next years exhibition I would have the seniors do more web sites and power points so they're better prepared to make the final ones. |
