Goals 2000 Proposal - Riverdale High School
Statement: Social studies skills such as
gathering data, data analysis, and interviewing are essential for
acquiring and understanding social studies content. The seniors
at Riverdale High School must produce an exhibition
where they display skills such as data analysis, public speaking,
research techniques, interviewing, and technology. This plan
gives students the support for developing the skills necessary
for planning, researching, and creating their exhibition.
Question: Will the teaching of skills like data
analysis, public speaking, research techniques, interviewing, and
use of technology through the 9th, 10th, and 11th grades improve
the quality of the senior exhibitions?
Action Proposal:
First, based on research and current practices, the social
studies teachers will develop a list of skills necessary for a
quality senior exhibition.
Second, teachers would make a scope and sequence of these skills
for 9th, 10th, and 11th graders.
Third, the scope and sequence would be implemented in Spring 2000
in the 9th 10th, and 11th grades for students to create a mini-exhibition.
This mini-exhibition would be a presentation to prove the mastery
of the concepts and/or skills taught.
Fourth, teachers would work with students at each grade level to
develop scoring guides on which exhibitions will be judged. They
would also develop a self-reflection process in which students
can judge their confidence and competence at learning the skills
and producing their mini-exhibition.
Predicted Outcome: The social studies teachers
will develop a list of skills necessary for a quality senior
exhibition. Students will show their understanding of the skills
by producing a mini-exhibition in the 9th, 10th, and 11th grades.
Teachers, parents, and other students will score the senior
exhibitions. Students at all grade levels will reflect on how
they view their confidence and competence at completing long term
project.
Data Collection/Analysis:
1. Develop the scope and sequence for 9th, 10th, and 11th grades
2. Score senior projects
3. Analyze student self-reflections
4. Use the class of 2000 as a base year by which to judge
improvement in senior exhibitions in subsequent years

We will report our progress at the Goals 2000 conference in the
Spring. When our work is complete this year we will report our
results to the Riverdale School Board.
