Introduction

The Cologne Cathedral is a symbol of the German mind-set. The German mind-set is a phrase that sums up the history and culture of the German people. The aspects of the mind-set include economics, politics, religion, nationalism, and society. This paper will begin to break down these elements by examining the cathedral itself. Certain things can be said about a culture’s architecture, and way of life. The cathedral in Cologne is a prime example of what was happening to Germany during its construction.

What can be said about the German mind-set? The Cologne Cathedral was built during a time of increasing freedom for the common people of Germany. It takes a precise environment for a cathedral to be built, and it is a phenomenon in itself. The Cologne cathedral is a symbol of the cultural elements put into its construction. I have concluded that the middle class determines the prosperity of a nation or city.
