"I am sorry, but we can no longer live like we used to. I feel so bad that I cannot afford for you kids to live in comfort. I will look for a new job as soon as possible, so don't worry." When my mother was laid off three years ago, these are the words she encouragingly said to my sister and me. However, in spite of her intensive search, she failed to find a new job. After two years of searching, she finally found a job in China, but it meant that she had to live separated from the rest of my family. In Japan, the environment has been getting harsher and harsher towards workers such as my mother since an economic crisis attacked Japan 15 years ago. The reason for my research comes from the motivation to find a way to make this environment easier on the workers. |
