Clones
& Touch Ups
We're really talking about photo touch up when we use the clone tool of the GIMP. The best way to learn how to do this is to play with some photos. We'll provide a couple below to get you started. Here's a great photograph of our high school but we don't like the light pole in the front. Let's just use the GIMP to remove it and see how it looks after a simple photo touch up. (See below...) ![]() You can download the full size version of this
photo to try your hand at GIMP cloning and touch ups. You'll want
to read up on the clone
tool in Grocking
the GIMP. Here's a look at our work in progress using the
clone tool.
Note
that we've selected a brush with soft edges and we've already started
"deleting" the light pole. It's easier to see what you're doing if you
zoom in and work on small sections with smaller brushes. Here's our final product, a school without a pole in the way!
Can you tell there was a light pole in front of our school?
Here's one more image you can use. We like this portrait of Alex but it looks like she's under attack from a giant leaf on the right side of the image. Can you get rid of the leaf and put in some nice tree bark instead? Click on the original image to see and save the full size photo to practice some cloning! ![]() ![]() Assignment: Practice on these two photos and then use some photos taken in your school. You'll need to print and mount at least one good "before" and "after" set of photographs. Criteria for Success: There should be no traces of your work. Shadows, texture, lighting and color should all be seamless. |
