Assignment 1:
Create an account on RHS On-Line and join the Digital Photography class.

Assignment 2: Get a digital camera.
I have three cameras we can share but it's better if you have your own. We'll spend some time in class learning about cameras and end up with a suggested list for you to use. You shoule be able to get a nice camera for less than $300.

Where to buy your camera in Portland:
Camera Suggestions:

Please purchase a battery charger and rechargeable batteries if your camera does not come with a charger. You should also consider buying an inexpensive tripod. I have a couple in class that I can loan out but you'll enjoy having your own.

Students are not required to buy cameras for this course. I do recommend that they have their own cameras. In terms of what is learned and the enjoyment that comes from photography, $300 for a digital camera is a good investment. My daughter sends me photos from college frequently. I'll never regret getting her a camera. ;-) Mr. Nelson

Some suggested cameras:

Coming soon...

Favorite eBay camera:
Canon G2 (4 mp, lithium, full controls, very sturdy & reliable) < $300

Short list of features you'll want to have:
  • 2 mega pixel resolution minimum
  • Lithium batteries are best.
  • AA battery charger if you don't have lithium batteries...
  • Optical zoom is more important than digital zoom.
  • At least 64mb memory card - buy an extra one if you need to.
  • Ability for manual exposure settings is important.
  • Get a case to protect your camera.
  • Save some money for a tripod.
