The Red White and Booze of the Campaign Trail

The set up: The Republican parties in both the Marriott and Governor hotels: Gordon Smith and Kevin Mannix

The party goes from stuffy to friendly with the help of booze.

New campaign slogan:  "Fill out your name tag, and fill up your cup at the door."

Governor hotel:  3 min before broadcast- the glitz and excitement stirs the press.

The countdown begins as the cameraman signals the speakers .

Kevin Mannix speaks to ch6. news, and holds his breath before the results are announced.

Meanwhile, at the Marriott Hotel, Senator Gordon Smith  speaks to his supporters about his plans for the future.

CH2. News catches up with the Oregon's new Senator to get in a few words about the election.

While the big shots smile and shine in the spot light, the children on the campaign trail lead somewhat lonelier lives. They trade in their tennis shoes and tee-shirts for loafers and business suits.

The little boy above is obviously wildly entertained by the excitement of election night.

11pm: This five year-old enjoys a late night snack on the dance floor.

At the Governor Hotel, the little girl above watched CNN and the results on 2002 elections.

Senator Gordon Smith's son dodges in and out of the crowds of people and has mindless conversations with strangers.

At 12:35pm the Republican party celebrates Senator Gordon Smith's victory.
