How to make a transparent GIF using the GIMP:

Let's say you have a table or page with a black background and you want to use an image
but let the background show through:

Non-transparent image	Transparent image...

Here's how to make a GIF image transparent:

1. Change the image to RGB mode from INDEXED mode.
   <right-click> >> Image >> Mode >> RGB
   
2. If the image does not have an alpha channel, add one.
   <right-click> >> Layers >> Add alpha channel
3. Use the wand selector and select the back ground color.
4. Delet the background color.
5. Save as a GIF.
